Scheduling tasks in TYPO3

Several tasks in TYPO3 should be executed on a regular basis or just once in a while. CRON jobs are your friend if it comes to automated execution of scripts on a webserver. But obstacles are plentyful on the road to getting CRON jobs to work properly.

Most of the difficulties occur because
a) configuring a CRON job is not exactly fool proof
b) some hosters only allow one CRON job at a time
c) there's no built-in possibility in TYPO3 to see what gets executed by CRON jobs

This is where "gabriel" enters the stage and brings enlightenment. Gabriel is a small but powerful TYPO3-Extension that provides CRON functionality for TYPO3-extensions. With gabriel only one CRON job (it's not mandatory to have one at all - but recommended) can be used to control as many scripts as required.
Gabriel comes with an easy to understand backend module, a built-in test script and a detailed tutorial for it's use in other extensions.

It will be shown how gabriel is constructed, how easy it is to make use of its functionality in custom built extensions and it will be demonstrated how several real world extensions already make use of it.

By means of a case study an overview of the extensions features will be given. Additionally it will be shown how easy it is to create extensions in a way that they can make use of gabriels featureset.
