Title

Continuous Integration for FLOW3

Authors

Sebastian Kurfuerst

Abstract

Many developers write unit tests after they wrote their application, if they even bother to write them at all. However, it really makes sense to use automated tests: By writing and running them continuously, you will create higher quality software with better design and less cohesion. There are so-called continuous integration tools which take care of running the tests and displaying the results publicly.
Continuous Integration has its roots in enterprise java projects, but is not commonly used in PHP development projects so far. However, for FLOW3, Continuous Integration is an integral part of the software development process.
During the talk, we will present the Continuous Integration tools we created for you as a future FLOW3 Developer, helping you to develop better FLOW3 based software!
Our Continuous Integration server is integrated with our central development platform, forge.typo3.org, so by developing there, you automatically get a lot of benefits: All information concerning your project including build results, failed tests or code coverage is visible at one central place, and you do not need to set up a continuous integration server yourself.
By the way - if you own a company and want to use your own continuous integration server: You can benefit from our work because everything we used is open to the public, ready for you to use. With little adjustments, you can even use our CI package for non-FLOW3-projects!
In this session, you'll learn why you should write unit tests, and how to run them automatically. You will get to know how to use the existing infrastructure efficiently, and how you can set up your own continuous integration server for commercial projects!
